Proposal for a site-specific installation at Union County College |
|||||
Part of a collaborative installation exhibition. Curated by Robert Costa To be installed in late August 2005 |
|||||
Site: | |||||
The installation will take place in the commons of the Cranford campus.
Description of Installation:
Based on the collaborative concept for the exhibition as set forth by the Curator my installation will function in combination with the installations of the other four artists. To do this I will create an imaging system that will present unique perspectives of all of the other artists’ work using real-time video images shown on a block of four televisions.
My installation will incorporate a series of surveillance cameras that will be attached to, or focused on each of the other artist’s installations. One camera will also be focused directly at the viewer as they look at the piece. These cameras will be fed through video-switching devices that will change the images randomly. The block of televisions will bring these images together in a single location and allow the viewer to watch themselves and the whole show at once. In addition, bright red bars will be painted on the surface of the televisions that will act as a mediating device between the viewer and the screen. These bars will create specific focus and tension on the surface of the glass as the video images flash behind them.
The televisions will watch the viewer as well as the entire exhibition. In doing so, the installation will re-image and re-imagine the entire show. It will ask a number of questions from simply how do we look at this exhibition, and what does it mean to see it in a different way, to more complex questions about the nature of perception and the artistic process both for the creator and the viewer. It will also address additional concerns about video surveillance and real time imaging. Overall the work will attempt to expand the boundaries of the exhibition while providing a readily accessible video component.
General Plan and On-Site Execution of the Installation:
Prior to the installation I will coordinate with the each of the other artists to determine how to place the surveillance cameras in relation to their work. This might include focusing a camera on their work at a close distance, putting a camera inside of their work or placing the camera in such a way to create a unique and otherwise impossible to see image of their work.
If possible two cameras will be used for each of the artists work. At the time of the installation the location of the cameras will be finalized and then installed with wires running to the location of the video switching units and the televisions.
The televisions will be installed on the western wall of the Commons on a prefabricated shelf that will hang using aircraft cable from the steel trusses of the building. The bottom of this shelf will be approximately eight feet from the floor. All electrical connections and devices will be placed out of view behind the monitors on the shelf. |
